All-in-One vs Split Solar Street Lights: A Colombian Lesson in Choosing Right (and Not Getting Burned)

All-in-One vs Split Solar Street Lights: A Colombian Lesson in Choosing Right (and Not Getting Burned)

2026-10-23

Not all solar street lights are built the same and if you pick wrong, your project pays for it.

Take Colombia. A distributor in Medellín once told us their story and honestly, it's the same story we hear from project teams across the tropics.

The client's request: A municipal authority needed street lighting for a 3 km residential corridor in a hot, humid valley town. "Just make it solar," they said. "Cut the electricity bill." Simple on paper. Painful in practice.

All-in-One vs Split Solar Street Lights: A Colombian Lesson in Choosing Right (and Not Getting Burned)

Where the pain hit:

  • It's hot and rainy year-round. Batteries overheat, controllers fail early.
  • Lamp poles are 9-10 m high. Every repair needs a crane and a crew.
  • The budget was fixed, but maintenance kept creeping up by year two, they were replacing more components than they'd planned for in five.

Sound familiar? That's the classic trap of choosing without matching the light to the site.

All-in-one solar street light solar panel, battery, LED and controller packed into one housing, bolted straight onto the pole. Quick install, neat look, great for small parks and low-height residential streets where future access is easy.

Split solar street light panel on top, LED lamp below, battery installed separately (buried or fixed on the pole), connected by cables. Bigger panel, bigger battery, made to handle heat and long-term duty.

Here's the rule we gave the Medellín team:

  • Small park, low pole, tight install budget, easy to reach later All-in-one.
  • Hot tropical site, high poles, hard-to-reach areas, projects that must run reliably for 5+ years Split.

They chose split for the valley corridor. Two years on, zero unplanned replacements the hotter the site, the more the split system earns its keep.

Don't just read the price tag. Match the light to your local weather and the project's service-life requirement.

And if you're not sure which type fits your Colombian site, tell us the road length, pole height and how long the project must run we'll help calculate the right wattage and configuration for you.
