Light and a Camera on the Same Pole: A South African Farm Road Security Upgrade

Light and a Camera on the Same Pole: A South African Farm Road Security Upgrade

2026-11-04

A farming and community area in South Africa needed two things at once light on the roads and yards after sunset, and a camera watching those same roads when nobody is outside. Neither could depend on the grid, because there was no reliable grid to depend on.

This is not a lighting brief with an extra item attached. It is a security brief that happens to be solved with light, which changes what a supplier has to provide.

Why Lighting Alone Would Not Have Solved It

Darkness and intrusion are connected but not identical problems. Good street lighting lets residents move around safely and makes an area feel occupied; a camera records what happens when it is not. Buying them as two separate projects means two power supplies, two mounting plans, two installation visits and two warranties. On a site with no mains power, it also means two solar systems which is where the economics break down.

The alternative the client accepted: one pole, one solar power system, one housing containing the light source and a PTZ dome camera. Illumination for people, surveillance for the property, shared energy storage for both.

A South African Farm Road Security Upgrade

The Configuration That Was Specified

Element Specification (100W reference model)
Solar panel 100W monocrystalline
Battery 3.2V 200Ah LiFePO4 sized to run light and camera through the night
Light output 80W-class LED, approx. 8,000 lm
Camera PTZ dome, built into the unit, covering the area around the pole
Charge / runtime 3-4 hours of good sun; at least 12 hours of nightly operation
Installation geometry 8-10 m mounting height, 40-50 m spacing between lights
Sealing IP65 housing, rated for humidity up to 90%
Control Remote adjustment of brightness, working mode and camera settings

Two build formats were offered. The all-in-one version keeps panel, lamp and camera in a single head compact, and the fastest thing to install on a new pole. The split version separates the panel from the light and camera unit, which matters when pole or wall space is constrained and the array has to be positioned for sunlight rather than for the fixture.

What Changed on the Ground

What Changed on the Ground

The roads and yards are now lit every night, which restored something harder to specify than lumens: residents move around after sunset instead of staying inside. The camera side does the quieter work continuous recording of activity around each pole, day and night, on the same energy budget as the lighting, with no electricity account to justify at the end of the month.

Dimension What a single-supplier order delivered
System cost One solar power system feeding both light and camera
Installation One mounting point, one commissioning visit, one set of settings
Operation Remote adjustment of brightness, mode and camera parameters
Accountability One warranty covering panel, battery, light and camera housing
Scalability Same platform repeated along a road at fixed spacing
