Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng Province in the Republic of South Africa. It is renowned as the "City of Gold" and serves as the economic, cultural and tourism center of the Republic of South Africa. It is also a world-famous international metropolis. On May 19th, 2025, we LEADRAY were fortunate enough to meet with our partners to exchange views on this street lamp product project and consult on various technical requirements.
As the economic center of South Africa, Johannesburg is in need of upgrading its urban lighting system, including replacing old street lamps, intelligent lighting management and energy-saving renovations, in order to enhance night traffic safety, reduce energy consumption costs and strengthen the city's image.
In recent years, the local government has been promoting the "Green City" program, setting higher requirements for the energy efficiency, intelligence level and durability of street lamps, with a particular focus on the application of solar street lamps, LED technology and Internet of Things (IoT) control systems.
Cooperative goals of street lamps
Both sides discussed the technical solutions for street lamp products, supply chain connection and localized service models, aiming to reach a long-term cooperation and provide Johannesburg with lighting solutions that meet its needs.
It must comply with the South African National Standard (SANS), such as SANS 1459 (Energy Efficiency of LED Lamps), SANS 50015 (Electrical Safety), and SANS 60598 (Protection Level of Lighting equipment).
The solar modules have been certified by the South African Renewable Energy Council (SARECE), and the lithium batteries must comply with the UN38.3 transportation standard.
Internet of Things (IoT) control: It is required to support remote monitoring (brightness adjustment, fault alarm, energy consumption statistics), and be compatible with local management platforms (such as the CityPulse system commonly used in South Africa).
The communication protocol needs to be adapted to low-power networks such as LoRa and NB-IoT to ensure stable operation even in the suburbs with weak signal coverage.
Dynamic dimming function: Automatically adjust the brightness based on traffic volume and weather conditions (such as heavy rain and smog). For example, when the traffic volume decreases in the late night, reduce the power to 30% to save energy consumption.
This exchange clarified the technical direction and cooperation framework of the Johannesburg street lamp project. Both sides reached a consensus on intelligent, energy-saving and localized services. Subsequently, it is necessary to accelerate sample verification and policy alignment, promote project implementation, and provide lighting solutions for the sustainable development of South Africa's "Golden City".
